With the help of a greenhouse gas balance, we can see in which sectors the most greenhouse gases are emitted and where we have options for action. We have levers for savings and can make sensible use of climate protection measures. As a quantitative analysis of the current situation, the greenhouse gas balance of the city of Burghausen from 2019 is also an essential part of the city's climate protection concept.

Methodology and procedure
The accounting methodology is based on the municipal accounting system (BISKO) developed by the Heidelberg Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (ifeu). This means that all final energy-based greenhouse gases emitted in the city are summarized by sector - from emissions from private households to transport to trade and industry. Due to the significant greenhouse gas emissions from Burghausen's industry, two representations were chosen in the report: one with and one without industry.

The year 2019 was set as the reference year for accounting because energy consumption changed significantly in 2020 and 2021 due to the corona pandemic.

Greenhouse gas scenarios, potential analysis and action planning
Based on this current status of greenhouse gas emissions, potential, scenarios and concrete measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions can be derived.

The effectiveness of the measures should sometimes be checked with regular greenhouse gas accounting.
