23 of the 24 communities in the district of Altötting belong to the eco-model region Inn-Salzach. The Inn flows through the region, and the Salzach borders the region on the eastern border of the district to neighboring Austria.

The district of Altötting has around 1.200 farms that cultivate an area of around 22.200 hectares of arable land and around 8.200 hectares of grassland. Almost six percent of farms operate according to ecological standards.
