The city of Burghausen wants to advance its sustainability efforts and also involve its citizens. It is important to Mayor Florian Schneider that citizens who are not active in politics or in associations and clubs have the opportunity to participate and contribute ideas. Because the future decisions on the subject of sustainability will also affect the living conditions of the residents of the city of Burghausen.
For this reason, the city of Burghausen decided in 2021 to set up a citizens' council to deal with the issue of sustainability in Burghausen. The Citizens' Council has 54 members.
For this purpose, 1000 people from the Burghausen population register were written to, who reflect the complete socio-demographic diversity of Burghausen. From the group of people who responded, people were then selected who represent Burghausen in the best possible way.
The Citizens’ Council met for the first time in spring 2022.
The second citizens' assembly took place in autumn 2023. The topic was sustainable consumption. Around 30 citizens developed concepts and recommendations for action for more sustainable consumption in Burghausen.
Tasks and goals of the Citizens' Council
The aim of the citizens' council is to support the city of Burghausen in its process of sustainability development. However, that is not the only goal. Other goals of the Citizens' Council:
- Carrying the topic of sustainability into society and further sensitizing the public to the topic.
- Through the participation of citizens, the perspective of the sustainability concept of the city of Burghausen will be reset. In this way, the sustainability goals can be implemented specifically to meet the needs of the local people.
- Target groups that have hitherto received little attention are to be introduced to the processes in the city through the special selection of participants. Diversity of opinion is an important point that should be promoted through the representative selection of people.
- By developing sustainability goals, the citizens' council presents the city council with target-oriented concepts and optimizes decision-making processes.
- Other representatives from various areas of the city of Burghausen, such as entrepreneurs or employees of the city administration, can be invited to the meetings of the citizens' council. In this way, the Citizens' Council can discuss other important points and perspectives with many different institutions.
