The city of Burghausen has been developing a climate protection concept since autumn 2023 and, after the first steps, has identified more than 60 climate protection measures (as of February 2024). They range from renewable electricity and heat generation to cycling and walking measures to sustainable urban procurement.

In autumn 2023, twelve internal city workshops took place to develop the climate protection concept. Divided into six working groups: Urban Planning, Construction, Mobility, Municipal Utilities, Culture & Events and Procurement & IT, the city employees involved first analyzed the status quo:

  • Where does the city of Burghausen stand in terms of climate protection?
  • Looking back, what have we done very well?
  • Where would there still be potential for more climate protection?

From the answers to these questions, the working groups have derived more than 60 climate protection measures to be implemented promptly in order to promote improved climate protection in Burghausen.

First Mayor Florian Schneider welcomes the intensive work on developing a climate protection concept: “This is the only way we can advance climate protection and keep life in our city as livable as before.”

The city of Burghausen is expected to publish the climate protection concept in mid-2024 together with the greenhouse gas scenarios and the potential analysis.

National climate protection initiative

With the National Climate Protection Initiative, the Federal Environment Ministry has initiated and supported numerous projects since 2008 that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its programs and projects cover a wide range of climate protection activities: from the development of long-term strategies to concrete assistance and investment support measures.

This diversity is a guarantee for good ideas. The National Climate Protection Initiative helps to anchor climate protection locally. Consumers benefit from this, as do companies, municipalities and educational institutions.
