The renovation of the Burghauser Salzlände in 2022 was unavoidable. The youngest street in Burghausen's old town houses the Burghauser flood protection system. Two devastating floods in the 1950s reflected how difficult the flooding situation was in the city's historic old town before the salt flats were built.
The Salzlände, including its flood protection, was completed in 1971. The integrated pumping station became the most important flood protection in Burghausen. Since the early 1990s, the Salzlände has had two lanes of traffic, since the pits are now only used as a pedestrian zone.
In 2022, the building was due to be completely renovated so that it would protect the residents of Burghausen against heavy rain and flooding in the coming decades. The redevelopment is one of the biggest construction sites the city has had to deal with in a long time. The surface of the building was so severely attacked by the ingress of nitrate that its entire statics were affected.
facts at a glance
Duration of renovation: March 2022 to November 2022
Investment sum: around 5 million euros. The water management office based in Traunstein bears 60 percent of this.
The construction measures were carried out in three construction phases from mid-March 2022 to November 2022. The surface was completely removed and the affected or attacked regions were determined by sampling, removed and renewed. During this time, it was not possible for buses and cars to drive through the salt flats, or only to a very limited extent.
In the final step, the Salzlände was asphalted throughout over its entire length of 577 meters. From November 2, 2022, the Salzlände was finally open to car traffic again. The traffic routing and the number of parking spaces will remain the same after the completion of the construction measures as before the renovation.
Burghausen's Mayor Florian Schneider was "very satisfied overall with the progress of the large-scale construction project. There were no accidents and the teams from the companies involved all did a very good job. The residents showed a lot of understanding despite some restrictions and construction site noise. It was a collegial cooperation on all sides with an optimal result. From November 2, 2022, the Salzlände will be open again and traffic will return to normal in the old town.
