A piece of the Berlin Wall in the Stadtpark © Gerhard Nixdorf

The Berlin Wall Memorial is only a small part of the Burghauser Park of German Unity. Two original parts of the Berlin Wall, an expressive black and white photograph and a short documentation are reminiscent of the division and reunification of Germany.

Although the memorial hardly takes up any space, it never fails to captivate visitors to the park. The photo motif and the sprayed parts of the Wall bring back memories of the Cold War, the East-West conflict, of divided families, of people who risked their lives for freedom. The parts of the wall bring times to life under which generations in Germany grew up.

At the same time, however, the memorial also radiates optimism, strength and joie de vivre - after all, it not only evokes the cold images of the Berlin Wall with its watchtowers, barbed wire and soldiers with rifles ready to fire. Rather, it also reminds people of the fall of the separating structure, of overjoyed people to whom the West was finally open, of men and women, senior citizens and children, who embraced each other beaming and set off together into a new age in Germany.

Anyone who visits the Berlin Wall Memorial in Burghausen and deals intensively with it will experience a roller coaster ride of emotions and will be guided through several decades of German history in fast motion.

Those interested can find the Berlin Wall Memorial in the Park of German Unity between Berchtesgadener and Unghauser Strasse.
