In the city of Burghausen, sports fans can regularly follow top-class sport. The range of sports in which the Burghausen teams or individual athletes show top performances is remarkable. Competitive sport has been a tradition in Burghausen for many decades.

The city of Burghausen is very committed to the professional and competitive athletes who call Burghausen their home. She focuses her attention primarily on the infrastructure, so that all those involved can find optimal training conditions in Burghausen.

The wrestlers of SV Wacker Burghausen fight in the 1st Bundesliga and have already secured the German team championships several times. In the ranks of the Burghausen wrestlers there are U23 world champions as well as athletes who have taken part in several European and world championships and won medals.

With Alexandra Burghardt, a two-time Olympic participant is at the start for the athletics department of SV Wacker Burghausen. Burghardt qualified for the semi-finals in the 2021-meter dash at the 100 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The following winter, the top sprinter competed as a brake in two-man bobsleigh at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, where she won a silver medal.

The swimmers of the SV Wacker Burghausen regularly draw attention to themselves on a national and international level. In competitions such as the German Championships, the SV Wacker athletes are often at the forefront. At European and World Championships they always achieve very good placings. SV Wacker swimmer Nicole Hetzer qualified for the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games in Sydney and Athens, respectively, where she secured a bronze medal. In 2008 she qualified for the Beijing Olympics.

The top athletes Alexandra Burghardt and Nicole Hetzer are not the only representatives of SV Wacker who took part in the Olympic Games:

+ In 1968 and 1972 swimmer Helmi Heiny (née Boxberger) and swimmer Dr. Lutz Stoklasa in Mexico City and Munich.

+ In 1976, Helmar Mang qualified in four-man kayaking for the Montreal Olympics.

+ From 1996 to 2016, Josef Neumaier competed in the Paralympic shooting competitions at a total of six Olympic Games. He traveled to Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro.

+ In 1972 Klaus Wolfermann (SV Gendorf) won Olympic gold in the javelin throw in Munich.

The SV Wacker Burghausen football team competes in the Bavarian regional league and impresses its fans with playful finesse and great fighting spirit. SV Wacker manages to show such a performance in the long term with the excellent work in the youth performance center (NLZ). This commitment is not only reflected in the successes of the regional team, but also in the transfers of outstanding athletes to the second German Bundesliga and other Bundesliga youth centers.

In the years 2002 to 2007 the 1st men's team of SV Wacker played in the 2nd Bundesliga.
