Summer resort in Burghausen

Future old town: 140 sqm shop on the town square open for creative people until summer 2024

Burghausen. The city of Burghausen has a shop in the old town, more precisely on the town square, for temporary use. The former fashion shop borders directly on the Stethaimer school. The school will be completely renovated from mid-2024, so long-term subletting currently makes no sense. "But the shop with a wonderful location on the town square is too bad that it's empty," said Mayor Florian Schneider. That's why he commissioned Tobias Hanig, the caretaker of the old town, to campaign for sensible interim use.

The idea

The 140 square meters with a shop window facing the town square are intended to serve as a "summer retreat" for artists or creative people. "Something has to stir, the door should be open as often as possible and an exchange with citizens and passers-by would be desirable," says old town caretaker Tobias Hanig, formulating the objective.

The city's offer is primarily aimed at creative people and artists who are looking for a new place to work and work in the summer / autumn, perhaps for inspiration. A pop-up shop or a pop-up café are also conceivable. You are open to all ideas.

“We are open to the creative ideas that hopefully await us. The application includes getting to know each other beforehand. The period of use should be at least four weeks.”

Applicants can expect a nice, clean shop with a shop window facing the town square and ten windows in the room. This is provided free of charge. Next door is a school, the Church of St. Jakob and the Hotel Post with restaurants and a beer garden. Opposite the new creative space for summer holidays is the town hall, the lion fountain and also a restaurant with a guest garden. "It couldn't be more central."

Burghausen and the creative people

Many artists and cultural workers (e.g. Adalbert Stifter, Paul Klee, Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz von Stuck, Regina Ullmann, Ludwig Thoma, Hannelore Elsner and of course jazz greats such as Jet Baker or more recently Jamie Cullum) have made stops in Burghausen in the history of the city and made their mark be inspired by the uniqueness of the city. A small town in south-eastern Bavaria flanked by a river that also forms the natural border with Austria. The Salzach comes from Salzburg and used to carry the white gold down the Salzplatten to Burghausen. In Burghausen, a stop had to be made at the so-called Mautner Castle (today a hostel for the adult education center and jazz cellar). The salt was weighed and a toll had to be paid. And high above all this is the longest castle in the world. “Picturesque and unique. This is our home, this is Burghausen to which we invite you,” says the mayor, Florian Schneider, who was born in Burghausen. The cultural city offers a wide range of art exhibitions, concerts, museums and galleries. www.burghausen.de
