The original system of the rivers Inn and Salzach with its formerly widely branched, dynamically changing river bed and its often very different water levels has left a unique landscape. The Salzach in particular is of immense importance in terms of nature conservation.

The biological diversity of this unique habitat and the animals and plants that live there should be preserved as far as possible for future generations. For this reason, on Germany's initiative, the EU member states are striving for a European network of biotopes that bears the name "Natura 2000". Natura 2000 is based on the Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) and the Bird Protection Directive (VS).

In a management plan, nature conservation and forest authorities record and evaluate habitats and species in the Natura 2000 areas - also along the Salzach. They propose conservation and restoration measures. The property owners and users can decide for themselves on the implementation of these ideas along the respective area. Among other things, they aim to reactivate floodplains and tributaries or create new ones, to replace flood dikes and to widen the river bed.

Burghausen also participates in the Salzach Habitat Community. The city is a supporter of a free-flowing Salzach.
