The Burghausen City Council is the political representation of the citizens of Burghausen. He is elected in a free, equal, direct, general and secret ballot by the citizens of the city. The city council is elected during local elections, which take place every six years in Bavaria. The last municipal election was in spring 2020. The mayor and his two deputies head the city council and work closely with it. The city council in Burghausen, together with the mayors, consists of a total of 25 members.

The responsibilities of the City Council include representing the city community, administrative tasks and making decisions at the municipal level. In the meetings, the city council discusses and votes on important city decisions such as the use of funds or urban planning, social or economic issues.

The city council has executive powers and can therefore issue statutes.

Any person over the age of 18 who is entitled to vote can be elected as a city councillor. However, one can only be elected to the council of the municipality or city in which one resides. You also have to be a citizen of the European Union. In order to make themselves available as a candidate for the local elections, interested parties must secure the support of a party or non-party group of voters.
