Exhibition in the City Museum © Burghauser Touristik GmbH

The Burghausen City Museum fascinates its visitors with the exciting art, culture and everyday history of Burghausen and its region. In the impressive rooms of the medieval Burghausen Castle, the exhibits bring the public back to times long past.

The City Museum was founded in 1899. The City Museum has been redesigned since 2016.

In the bower of the main castle, those who are interested will find three captivating permanent exhibitions dealing with castle life in the Middle Ages and Burghausen's town and art history.

On the ground floor, the city museum gives an insight into life at a princely court in the Middle Ages. The exhibition impressively documents how Duchess Hedwig von Bayern-Landshut lived with her court in Burghausen Castle between 1475 and 1502. There were always festivals, tournaments and hunts.

Since Burghausen, as the residence of the rich Dukes of Lower Bavaria and later as a government city, was home to wealthy clients, a large art scene developed in Burghausen over the centuries. Various exhibits attest to this in the “Art in Burghausen” exhibition – from the Middle Ages through the Baroque period to the present day.

A large department in the city museum is dedicated to the history of Burghausen. Here visitors can find out interesting facts about Burghausen – from the first traces of human settlement to the present day. Those who are interested can take exciting trips into the past: to the time of the witch hunts, to the beginnings of tourism with boats and Bengali lighting on the Wöhrsee or to the settlement of Wacker Chemie in Neustadt.

The City Museum offers guided tours with various themes. Children and young people can discover the city museum in a playful and active way, for example with a museum puzzle.
A barrier-free path and a ramp make it easier for people with disabilities to access the City Museum. In the city museum itself, however, it becomes a bit difficult because there are stairs and thresholds in the museum.

If you want to find out more information about the exhibitions in the City Museum or inquire about opening times, admission prices and guided tours, you can find out everything you need to know on the City Museum website.
