The Town of Burghausen (Postal Code: 84489)
Burghausen lies at an easterly longitude of 12°50' and a northerly latitude of 48°510'. The Old Town lies 360 metres above sea level (Triest). The new town with the castle lies at 420 metres. The highest point is the Kümmernis at 490 metres above sea level.
The town is located between Passau and Salzburg on the Salzach river (since 1779, border river with Austria) on the "Blue Route" (B 20) in the administrative region of Upper Bavaria. Burghausen is at the centre of the South East Bavarian Region and, with its approx. 19,000 residents, is the largest town in the Altötting administrative district. The climate is very mild, which is why Burghausen is known as the "Bavarian Meran." There is a town twinning with the Agglomeration Fumeloise, five friendly cities that have formed a group in France, and with the Slovenian city of Ptuj.
While some towns on the Inn and Salzach have remained frozen in time, the Burghausen of today can no longer be compared to the days of Ludwig Thomas, who went to school here. With the founding of the Wacker chemical plant, not only did a new chapter open in Burghausen's chronicles, but the history of the new town began. This important event in the town's development is summed up in a few words by the chronicler Dr. Anton Asboeck in 1935: "1915: In the north of the city, the plant facilities of the Dr. Wacker company are being erected. Burghausen's economic development is experiencing an important impact. Coming hand in hand with this economic expansion is a large-scale housing development that is bringing a New Town to life. The street names of the new development reveal the nature of the housing facilities. Names such as Franz-Alexander, Wacker, Johannes-Hess, Wöhler Liebig, Max-Eyth Strasse, etc."
